• Sonisphere 2011 band roundup

    Fri 8 Jul – Sonisphere Festival 2011

    FRIDAY

    Anthrax
A really good way to kick start the music. I had heard rumours that Joey Belladonna was past it and could no longer sing in tune. LIES. He was fantastic and the set list was near perfect (I knew they wouldn't play Safe Home without John Bush so it didn't disappoint me)

    Glamour Of The Kill
I'm not a big fan but I caught them just before Firewind. They weren't bad but they weren't outstanding either. They spent ages on the wall of death too.

    Firewind
This was one of my highlights. Pure showmanship. The Fire and The Fury was one of my highlights of the weekend end (especially when Gus put a towel over Bob's keyboard and he played the whole solo blind. Only slight gripe was that they didn't play Mercenary Man.

    Protest The Hero
I was really excited about this one. I saw them in '09 and they were fantastic. Once again, Rody was charismatic, cracking jokes in between songs - funny as always. …

While I won't review every band I saw, I will cover as much as I can.

    FRIDAY
While I like Anthrax, I'm one of those people who would prefer John Bush over Joey. Their performance was great, but given this is was the third time I'd seen them, I was happy enough lying on the grass towards the back. That said, they were excellent.

Megadeth were one of the most impressive bands at Download 2010, so I was really excited to see them and spent a decent amount of time orchestrating a good position in the crowd. The setlist was diverse and exciting. Chris Broderick is one of the most deservedly smug guitarists I've ever seen, while Megadave was in surprisingly good spirits. He was affable and enthusiastic. As per 2010, Megadeth were professional beyond measure. Enjoyable.

They might be the most consistent band in the entire world. I know what to expect when I see Slayer live. What I didn't expect was a setlist quite as perfect as the one they played in the sunshine that fine afternoon. …
