Melbourne Cricket Ground

Melbourne, Victoria, Melbourne
Austrália
The Australian music community is banding together for a couple of massive fundraising events in response to the Victorian bushfires and Queensland floods.

The Sound Relief concerts are on Saturday 14th March at the Sydney Cricket Ground and the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The line-ups include big name local acts plus a guest international in each city. Coldplay and Kings Of Leon both have sold out concerts on March 14 in Sydney and Melbourne respectively, so they’ll both play short sets early in the afternoon.

Tickets will be sold for $75 and will go on sale on Wednesday March 4, 2009 at 9am.

100% of the profits from the Melbourne concert will be donated to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

For the Sydney concert 50% of the profits will be donated to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal and 50% will be donated to The Premier’s Disaster Relief Fund Appeal in QLD to aid the victims of the Queensland floods.

Here is a review of the event on my website. One of the best concerts ever. Cannot wait for the DVD release (as I really want to see the Sydney acts in full!) http://tr.im/iVaM Just fantastic and they ended up with over $7 M for Melb fires! How good is that!

hey guys i was just wondering if anyone had a spare ticket from the event that they would be nice enough to give to me? its just that I'm a keen ticket collector for concerts I attend and my friend who bought the tickets just printed them off the website. thanks in advance guys.

Well I for one was happy that Kings of Leon didn't play Sex on Fire. I also would have preferred if they didn't play On Call, Revelry, Use Somebody or Crawl... Do you really think they went to the organisers and said: "We'll play, but only for 4 songs"? Given that everyone else in the first half only got 4 songs, I'd say that it was more likely that they chose the time first (given that they had prior commitments that night) and were then assigned a set of 4 songs.

Did you turn up expecting a power metal festival or something?

Yes jaseparlo, I totally agree. Would have swapped Coldplay for KOL anyday. KOL didn't even look like they wanted to be there. And 'Sex On Fire' not appropriate? If we spent our lives avoiding things that are related to horrible events that have occured our lives we'd never get over it. How would we have felt if the Oils did not play 'Beds are Burning'? We were cheated. It is like they didn't play it because the didn't think we deserved to hear it as it wasn't their concert. Chris Martin deserves 'honourary Australian status'. I'm so jealous of Sydney, having him running through the crowd during 'Fix You'. Even 'Waltzing Matilda' would have been a better choice of song for Kylie. Everyone knows the first and last verse and thats about it. If it was regarded as an 'anthem', we should at least know the lyrics. Crowded House was a major highlight. Gabriella Cilmi was trying to hard. Awesome concert, an awesome day. Needs to be released on DVD.

To relight the KOL/Coldplay argument :P - I arrived on the day glad that we got KOL in Melbourne instead of Coldplay, but they played a tiny set, and while his words said they were honoured to be there, their performance was flat as a tack and they acted like they were doing us a favour. Maybe that's how they always are live, in which case why bother seeing them? Coldplay OTOH in Sydney, played a longer set, threw their hearts and souls into the performance and really performed. And as for Kylie - if there was a defacto anthem it would probably be "I am, You are, we are Australian". I still call Australia Home is meaningless to Australians who still live here. Although it is the Qantas theme song, and who was the major sponsor? Other than that piece of cynicism though, wow, what an amazing day! I'm suffering a post gig bummer...

Ehh, it's all subjective. I was trying to be more concerned about whether or not they put on a good show rather than if I like their style... Bliss n Eso did the former well, but it was SO contrived.

I stopped reading after you liking ear-bleeding Cilmi and hating Bliss n Eso. Sucks the power went out during their set... and a shame they didn't turn Jack Johnson up more, I could hardly hear him. Awesome day otherwise... Cilmi, Kings of Leon and Kasey Chambers the only ones I hated.

kylie's national anthem did not much for me: Oils,Wolfmother, Crowded house reunion, jet, split enz, paul kelly did it for me in that order

Awesome concert. One of the most amazing things ever. Hope they release a dvd and/or live cd! The performances were top notch. Especially the surprise appearance from Crowded House, and the last three acts (Hunters, Split and Midnight) were amazing.
