Sun 21 Dec – Symphony Tour

Last night, I went to a Sarah Brightman concert here in Phoenix, the last event of her Symphony Tour of 2008 (see the poster - right). And what a treat it was - both for the eyes and the soul. My date and I stayed on till the very last second of it - which is very untypical for me. I rarely have enough patience to spend 2.5 hours listening to just one performer.

But Sarah is no ordinary performer. She is beautiful in every sense of the word - physically as a woman. She makes beautiful music - gifted with an amazing voice that ranges from the softest pianissimos to crescendos that can shatter a Champaign glass.

And the choreography of the show, including some fascinating stage effects, was simply spectacular. It was a combination of computer-generated images projected on giant mirror. and music and dance by real flesh and blood artists, that transported the audience to magical places in Dreamland or Neverland. It was "Hollywood live," if you will.

An English-born Broadway star who was once married to the famous composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sarah was the inspiration behind such stage hits as "Phantom of the Opera" and "Requiem," written in her honor by ex-husband.

It was interesting to see the crowd's reaction to her performance of a tune from the "Phantom of the Opera" (available on YouTube with Antonio Banderas). As soon as the orchestra played the opening five notes (click here to hear them), even before Sarah opened her mouth, the audience burst into applause and cheering in anticipation of a musical delight to come.

Those of you who are not yet fans of Sarah, a 48-year old who could pass for a college student, may want to click here to see her bio, which also includes audio links to some of her hit songs. I first got to know a little over six years ago, when I took her with me for a weekend in New Mexico (see A Weekend with My Legacy, June 2002).

Anyway, if Sarah Brightman ever comes into your hometown for a concert, go! You won't regret it even if you have to buy a ticket from a scalper.
