Fri 22 Jun – Graspop Metal Meeting 2007

I heard a lot of stories of this festival how bad the organisation suck.
So time to find it out myself.
The rules I read on the site and how it is organized what stands on the site let me think that this festival suck indeed.
The biggest stupidity is that you can not come a few days earlier but only get there in the first festival day, stupid fuckers.
When we arrived and get our stuff to the entrance you directly see how everything is arranged and that is not good.
You must wait hours before you are at the entrance and nobody knows where you can exchange your ticket to another ticket and than to a festival thing for your arm.
After more than 3 hours waiting and cursing we were finally on the campground.

    Day 1:

After putting the tent on we headed to the festival ground cause these stupid assholes of the organisation put a band as Thin Lizzy as second playing band of the day, wtf.
But when we get there I hear that they have cancelled.
When we came 1349 are begon ay too early and stop too early and that was bad cause what I have seen they were great.
So up to VADER where I could get a place in the front.
After seen them 3 times earlier this summer I know what to expect and they did a good job again with songs as Predator, Wings, Shadowfear and This Is The War.
Next up BELPHEGOR whom I seen 2 days ago with Vader.
This is the same setlist and that kicked ass, a great show with their dirty rotten music, I love it.
AMORPHIS and GRAVE DIGGER are playing at the same time and that suck.
First watch 20 minutes of AMORPHIS and that was way too good to leave, what a show, a love the song Alone.
So quick headed to GRAVE DIGGER that did a very good job.
The rock the tentstage and this is perfect music to headbang.
With Heavy Metal Breakdown this show has come to an end.
Watch for 20 minutes WITHIN TEMPTATION but they still suck with their new album.
Dreams back to the good times with Enter and Mother Earth.
So time to get some beers and eat something and than headed to the next band.
    And that is CELTIC FROST.
On albums like Emperors Return and Morbid Tales their music is brilliant but live it is not that good as on cd.
It was still a good show what I enjoyed but it can better.
Now it was time to drink some beers with others and walr around the metal market.
Bands as CHRIS CORNEL and JOE SATRIANI I don’t want to see.
I walked to the tent where TYPE O NEGATIVE where going to play but what was this bad.
They fucked up the music and it sounded when I have eaten a lot of garlic and shit the whole place full.
AEROSMITH was a band that if they play where you are you must see.
I recognize a lot of songs and they played very good and I liked the show.
And it was very cool that they played I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.
I was not pretty drunk so time to lay down somewhere and wait for the next band
After that BLIND GUARDIAN was playing in the tent.
Somehow the music was not coming out good and I went away after 2 songs.
So than watch THERION that play in the other tent.
When I walked in I stayed the whole concert.
The sound was good, the show was very good.
I enjoyed this big time, what a performance, this was the best band of the day.

    Day 2:

The day begon with missing a lot of bands like LAUREN HARRIS, LAMG OF GOD, SPIRALARMS and SPOILER NYC but only cause they suck.
The first band I see was SIRENIA, the band that have on every album a new singer but on every album they have a good singer.
The band played pretty good today, the sound could better.
The setlist was good with songs as The Other Side, Meridian and Sister Nightfall? I thought.
Next up STONE SOUR but that is not my kind of music and after 15 minutes I was getting bored.
So up to the tent to watch the next band.
LEGION OF THE DAMNED was up and with their thrash people start getting moving.
At this time I don’t know the second album very well but their first one is great and songs of that gets me moving with my head.
    Nice show.
LIFE OF AGONY was up now, the band that is life always boring and so it was today.
On cd it is pretty good but live not that good.
CANNIBAL CORPSE are ready to hammersmash some faces.
With their great death metal and a very good singer with a neck that bounce to all sides you are guarantee for a good show.
And so this was with songs as Make Them Suffer, Fucked With A Knife and Decency Defied.
When I was shitting I hear some thunder followed up with some heavy raining.
HEAVEN & HELL (BLACK SABBATH with DIO) I really wanted to see.
After seen them 2 years ago with Ozzy I can see them now with their other singer.
What a great show this was, really enjoyed this kings.
But after 40 minutes or so I was soaking wet, drunk and tired so time to get to somewhere else.
TIAMAT was starting in the tent.
I don’t know them very well, I only have the album Wildhoney.
But this show was very good, they play good and I enjoy it.
After that I don’t want to see KORN so time to drink some beers with others.
Around 10 in the evening DIMMU BORGIR was starting in the tent.
The sound was not that good but I like the show.
Good to hear songs as Kings Of The Carnival Creation, Spellbound and Mourning Palace.
But I was pretty drunk cause by all the booze so I was happy that only 1 band was to go.
IRON MAIDEN headliner of the second day start around 11 in the evening.
The played very well but besides the new songs they play the songs as you already know like Number Of The Beast, Run To The Hills and so on.

    Day 3:

The last day has come of this festival.
    And the day started DEVILDRIVER.
To my surprise I liked it and they did a good show, some nice mosh and circle pits.
With ELUVEITIE on stage it is crowded cause the exist about 9 man or something.
I don’t know them but they played very well.
They have impress me with their show.
Time for CHIMAIRA that have impress me very much 2 years ago.
To be honest I can’t remember them anymore, probably because the booze.
Cause TURISAS is a band I don’t want to see on festivals I take a look in the other tent where MERCENARY had some line up changes and I don’t know if that’s the reason but today they could not impress me.
BLACK LABEL SOCIETY was the next band that I only know from name but their music is not made for me so quickly get some beers to say sorry to my ears.
MOONSORROW was the next band in the tent.
I can’t remember the gig anymore but if I watch my photo’s I must be somewhere in the front.
But I think it was good cause I can remember that I stayed till the end.
HAMMERFALL I watched from a distance cause I was to drunk to walk to the mainstage so I keep lie down somewhere in the field.
    But HAMMERFALL sounded really good.
    Next up KORPIKLAANI.
The show was great, I pissed the booze out of my body and I was ready to kick some asses in the moshpit.
After half an hour I already was tired but just keep going, what a great show with songs as Hunting Song, Happy Little Boozer and some other party songs from Voice Of Wilderness.
    Next Up CHILDREN OF BODOM.
They did a very good job, some great songs Angels Don’t Kill, Mask Of Sanity and Are You Dead Yet.
Done some headbanging and enjoy the show further lie down somewhere in the field.
Time for FINNTROLL that I should see for the first time with the new singer.
But somehow the show was not good, if it is the new singer or they were not in good shape today I don’t know, maybe another time better.
SLAYER is always cool and so today but I was tired and was sitting down in the beergarden and watch from there the show.
The setlist is very predictable but I don’t care that much with them.
Time for AMON AMARTH, a band I was looking forward too, and I think more people cause it was very crowded.
So I must do it with a place in the back but that doesn’t matter cause I can get there crazy to on songs as Death In Fire, Asator, An Ancient Sign Of Coming Storm, Cry Of The Black Birds, Fate Of Norns and Runes To My Memory.
What I great show, one of the better ones this weekend.
OZZY OSBOURNE is headlining the last day.
After I see him with Black Sabbath a couple of years ago now with his solo band.
It’s a crazy man on stage with a lot of I can’t fucking hear you but I don’t care, it’s an American.
You can sing along with songs as Crazy Train, Mr. Crowley, Warpigs, Bark At The Moon, Road To Nowhere., No More Tears and Paranoid.
This was really a cool show.
The last band in the small tent was the coverband STORMRIDER.
I saw them 15 minutes but I was so drunk and tired that I go sleep.

So this was the end of a cool weekend.
But the organisation has a lot of work to do cause they fuck up everything what you could fuck up.
Maybe an idea to look to most of the German festivals.

  • 22,23,24/06/07 - Graspop Metal Meeting 2007 - Dessel (B)

    Nov 10 2007, 10h20 por KashNL

Zo!

    + De gevarieerde line-up

  • Summer Festivals - Graspop, Metal Camp and Wacken

    Set 10 2007, 19h39 por Jims101

Have just returned home from a summer spent traveling. First through Europe, then up to Scotland with my folks and finally a week in India.

Of course the Euro leg of the Summer tour wouldn't have been complete without taking in a few festivals and this time around we made it to Graspop Metal Meeting, Metal Camp and of course, Wacken Open Air.

Haven't had a chance to write up Wacken yet, but there's posts and photos for Graspop and Metal Camp up on my site for your viewing pleasure. I could harp on about how awesome both festivals were but I've already done so at the links above so go check em out!

    Graspop Metal Meeting 2007

    Personal Brainpuke:

Type O Negative: Sounded like someone was killing a cat, walked away quickly not to destroy my admiration of this band.

Joe Satriani: yup, he the man!

Amorphis: Nice, need to listen to more amorphis.

Blind Guardian: One hell of an Epic performance, sing-a-long bard song! :D

Lamb of God: Walk with me in hell! Insane fucked up pit action, good morning motherfuckers!

Stone Sour: cool, another beer please.

Within Temptation: I just hate comercial metal with clear female vocals. Sucked

Cannibal Corpse: old skool motherfuckers, rule!

Korn: yes, we meet again... wtf? is that joey on the drums? \m/

    Iron Maiden: so big!

Dimmu Borgir: I Enthroned Darkness Triumphant in this increidble live Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia :P

Black Label Society: sounds so fucking thick you can taste it! Zakk owned me.

Children of Bodom: huge, i mean fucking HUGE, circle pit, im in the middle, devil horns in the air... Are you dead yet?

Slayer: fucking hell on earth, hardest insane mosh pit in my lifetime. Almost lost my jaw O.O

Personal Note: be there again next year.

    Another personal note: Timmyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!
  • On Last, life, scrobbling failures and Graspop

    Jul 11 2007, 13h54 por jonanamary

I haven't written a journal for a while so why the hell not? This is going to be a bit disjointed as my thoughts are all over the place today. I might tidy it up a bit later but whatever.

I am probably more bothered than I should be by the fact that my company's new web filter means I can't scrobble from work any more. Aargh. As 90% of my music listening takes place during working hours, this is going to mess up my stats. It's especially annoying as I've recently added rather a lot of stuff to my playlist (Amesoeurs, !T.O.O.H.!, Arcturus, At the Gates, Belphegor, Empyrium etc etc) which isn't showing up. Must be my OCD showing. Also, an overloaded social calendar means my evenings are mostly spent out rather than at home, which is good for my mental health and wellbeing, less good for my bank balance, my waistline and attempts to finish watching Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica. I'm sure this will change later in the month as I run out of money.

OH MY LIFE IS SO HARD (ahem)

UPDATE: As of 13/07/07, my scrobbling is working again!! HOORAY! This means the Deathspell Omega, Deathchain, Peste Noire and Nachtmystium I added to my playlist today will show up.

Anyway, there are some spectacular gigs coming up in the autumn and I have ordered some more CDs from Amazon in order to prepare. Following a recommendation from auritech, I got Twilight of the Idols by Gorgoroth, as they are playing a gig in London. Still being a relative newbie when it comes to black metal, I know they're one of those bands I ought to know but haven't got round to yet because, meh, time. A bit nervous about the gig, actually - it sounds like it will be pretty hardcore. Think I might hover at the back and duck any flying axes which come my way.

Also on order from Amazon: Imaginations From The Other Side, Drudenhaus, Eric The Red, as I absolutely love love love these bands and need more of their stuff. Having seen Blind Guardian live at Graspop (on which more later!), I need to see them again. Týr are playing Wacken and by god I am tempted to go because they are superb. I was in France in 2002-03 so probably missed a load of chances to see Anorexia Nervosa, which I am kicking myself over now since after a rocky start (I got Exile as my first album by them, and didn't get on with it) I then got Redemption Process and New Obscurantis Order and understood finally what all the fuss was about. I never thought I would like a cover of a song by Indochine but with Les Tzars they really proved me wrong.

OK it's lunchtime and I need to go and get food ... this will be updated later with pictures and words all about how absolutely AMAZING Graspop was. Stay tuned! If anyone actually bothered reading this self-serving, solipsistic twaddle all the way to the end. :)

    UPDATE TIME!!! GRASPOP WOO WOO

Righty then, here are some edited extracts from my Graspop diary (a Hello Kitty notebook I scribbled in between running from one end of the festival site to the other). I should note first of all that the festival got off to a slightly shaky start due to the previous night being spent in the best bar in Brussels drinking 9% Russian beer out of these:

    Ouch.

Apologies for the lack of detailed analysis of bands' performances.

    ------7.55pm 22/06/07------
Camping sucks but showers are awesome. OK bands quick impressions: Missed 1349, fuck, but so it goes. Vader: fucking awesome, will def have to check them out. Belphegor: Ohmigod SO GOOD.
    ...
Pissed it down intermittently, v. heavily. God, I really hate female-fronted metal w. clean vocals (Within Temptation). Oh my god I am going to see Blind Guardian v. soon oh YES.

    Metal families are so adorable.

Oh my god this festival sells coffee. DUNCAN HILLS coffee. Blacker than the b'est b x ∞. W/i Temp'n = generic + crap.

Ugly man-woman tried to push in front of me [in queue for wrist bands] so I called her a scum-sucking queue-jumping shit-fucker. Fair enough, I thought. Ugh, respect the laws of the queue.

Oh yes, Static-X, they were quite good (guilty memories of nu-metal phase). YOU PUSH IT ner-ner-ner-ner-ner-ner-ner. W/i Temptation still suck.

The left-hand guitarist from Belphegor reminded me of a Francis Bacon painting when he swung his beautiful long hair around.

    ------10.22pm 22/06/06------

Chris Cornell REALLY FUCKING SUCKS. (I approve this condemnation - Phil.)

    Friday photos:

    ------4.15pm 23/06/07------
Watching Atheist in Marquee I. Just spent lots of €€€ in the Metal Market.

Woke up this morning every two hours (4, 6, 8, 10) - glad to see my <3 of even numbers hasn't deserted me. Had a shower - fine, decent flow, a bit hot but not a problem. Have sunburn on my left shoulder + a nice strap mark. Felt a million times better after the shower even if it isn't v brutal of me.

Last night: Blind Guardian. Just ... no words. Everything I'd expected. Plain black outfits, adorable German accents, looked like they were having the most fun ever. Genuinely moving singalong to TocarThe Bard's Song. Think Phil is a convert. Finished really fucking late [2.30am].

Before BG, saw Celtic Frost - proper evil old-school stuff - then went to the 24h party tent where we had a nice sleep. I woke up at 11.45pm to find a man asleep with his head on Phil's crotch [see photo above]. Absolutely hilarious and puzzling. Woke up to TocarDeath in Fire, can't wait to see them again.

This morning, played drinking games with my "fan club" (heavy irony) of Belgian children. Used the Bacardi. Did they add Bacardi to the OJ? No, other way round. Sigh. I hope it doesn't go off ...

Another metal child! With a buzzcut this time. Oh that is so adorable.

Rushed to the arena today (in relative terms) in order to see Lamb of God. Had to wait until my coffee cooled first, though. Met the Maiden fans from yesterday afternoon - small world.

OK LoG: predictably tight, aggressive + loud. V. good set - won over the Belgians. Impressive pits for half one in the afternoon.

Phil is wearing his DragonForce tee today - it's become a lot harder to find him in the crowd. Relatively tall bloke with longish mousy hair + a beard in a black t-shirt? Oh god he is one of millions.

Now am waiting for Cannibal Corpse (I don't even like them - it's a pure comedy factor thing) + contemplating sleep. Vaguely hungry, too. Think a burger is justified after all the walking I've done recently.

    Saturday photos

    ------12.10pm 24/06/07------
    In the tent. It's raining.

    ------1.05pm 24/07/06------
Sitting on an abandoned camping chair. Yesterday, got trampled at Dimmu Borgir, was v. exciting! They were great, I think - all a bit of a blur. Acquired another set of protectors at DB, how funny. Oh shit rain, will write more soon. \m/

    ------2.42pm 24/06/07------
Waiting to see Moonsorrow, which Phil says would be an awesome name for an EQ character. Spent lots of yesterday talking to randoms which is always fun. French people by the Special Beers tent were nice. Was too drunk to watch much Maiden but I've never liked them anyway. Am so excited about Moonsorrow.

Am wearing the 'metal secretary' outfit today. Spent far too much in the Metal Market, oh well. Saw an Opeth tattoo. Also, Turisas covering Rah Rah Rasputin was brilliant. Wish i'd been further forward for that.

I need a metal t-shirt, but most of them are so ugly. Le sigh.

    ------4.55pm 24/06/07------
I'll have to be quick as Korpiklaani are about to come on, but I'd just like to say that Moonsorrow were the best damn band of the festival so far.

A random Dutch guy has just treated me to a treatise on the importance of memory as it relates to diary keeping. Why am I writing? Habit, I suppose.

    ------17.55pm 24/0/07------
I'd just like to point out again that Moonsorrow were so good, they made me cry.

Just seen Korpiklaani, they were pretty cool, about to see CoB. Sould be better than Unholy Alliance at least.

Tried to buy a t-shirt and failed. No girly black tees with acceptable designs left. I hope the knock-off ones are a bit better choice-wise.

    ------8.22pm 24/06/07------
Am in Marquee I a.k.a. folk metal land waiting for Amon Amarth. hey kind of crept up on me and before I knew it I was a fan. They should be great, and we are lying down right by the front so hopefully we'll have a good view.

Anyway, roll call so far is Korpiklaani, Children of Bodom (main stage), and Finntroll. I still need to see CoB at their own concert - third time lucky i.e. although matters weren't helped by my general state of knackeredness and aching bones, there was still something stopping me getting into their set. Mask of Sanity was good though. Finntroll, Korpiklaani were pretty much as expected - good, bouncy fun. God damn my tiredness!

Men in kilts are starting to grow on my (not literally). Oh yes Alexi Laiho is very beautiful and I want to know who does his makeup - does he do it himself?!

Oh god the girl at Moonsorrow who was sitting down WTF and then got a face like a smacked arse when people, er, walked into her. Like, hello darling, this is a gig. Having said that, I thought the pit was a bit unnecessary - I blame everyone who as just in the tent to shelter from the rain rather than see the band. Kivenkantaja rocked but... no Unohduksen lapsi? Sad face :(.

Am surrounded by kids - I feel so old.

Think next year I will make myself a t-shirt saying "Is this Glastonbury?" Haha, I hope the hippie fucks got rained on to shit, ha ha ha.

    Sunday photos

And a bonus Moonsorrow video! I forgot to mention the crazy music they came onstage to. Eccentric to say the least. :)

This kid's Gollum impression was spooky!

    ------1.31pm 25/06/07------
Made it to BXL without too much difficulty, currently sitting in the café with the mirrors I went to with F+Sara. Croque madame + lots of crudités and I feel much better. Knackered though, bone-deep tired. Last night AA: worth the wait. Had the full Viking battle at the start and everything. Death! In! Fire! As! A! Tor! Runes To My Memory, Cry Of The Black Birds, With Oden On Our Side, and some others I can't quite remember just now. Set flew by, felt like it was over even before it began. Was about 4 or 5 rows from the front. Also acquired several new protectors - er, thanks, guys. The girls in front of me needed them more though - they were about 4ft tall! Respect for daring that pit.

The guys with the weapons were cool - that's the way to do it. The beach ball nearly got skewered and I loved their war dance + chant beforehand.

Also, we saw Phil's doppelgänger! Hair a bit too blond and glasses too round but otherwise perfect down to the DragonForce t-shirt. Hope the photo came out OK [it did - see above].

So after AA we wandered around the stores and vaguely caught bits of Ozzy. He was quite out of tune.

Oh god was so thirsty after AA. Contemplated drinking a half glass of Coke I found on a table but decided against it.

Also, god only knows how we managed not to fall over in the mud.

Arms and shoulders are aching - heavy metal workout.

My new name is Coconut Lady and I am a bad mother to my horde of little Belgian children whose favourite hobby is tent-diving.

The kid who had collected a stack of cups taller than he was, only for some half-naked ruffian to steal a fair chunk through judicious use of a well-timed flying leap.

I want to go to another festival. Had forgotten how very fun they can be. Makes it all worthwhile - makes it worth all the effort.

    Jul 1 2007, 10h30 por noise666

Ven. 22 juin – Graspop Metal Meeting 2007

Fri 22 Jun – Graspop Metal Meeting 2007

Up next was dus Vader.

Tijd voor Legion of the Damned.
Zelfde clichée zinnetjes ('the next one goes to all you fuckin' women out there', 'this song is about shooting blood out of your cock'), en weer nul komma nul connectie met het publiek.
Jammer genoeg wel Me First & the Gimme Gimmes gemist, die tegelijkertijd speelden.

Black Label Society zette een goede show neer.
Me toch vergist in die muziek.
Children of Bodom was in één woord geweldig.
Geweldig gewoon.
Leuk extraatje was een melige Araya: “the next song is about love”.

    + Campinglol
    + TIMMAH
+ Bizarre figuren (altijd leuk, aapjes kijken)

But it was all worth it.

  • Korpiklaani, Turisas, Eluveitie, Finntroll and Maiden seen live!

    Jun 28 2007, 16h04 por Noise_Memories

Fri 22 Jun – Graspop Metal Meeting 2007
Yeah, Graspop is like a few days ago now, but I'm still thinking of it a lot *HAPPY MEMORIES*. Now that I'm ready with most of my tests of school, I can finally write a review (or something that looks like that^^). Well, here are the top concerts of the festival:

    1. Korpiklaani
Not that I've seen many concerts, but this one was the best EVER! I had never seen them live, so I was really excited. I was standing (jumping, but whatever) in the front and the whole crowd was going crazy! They played Cottages and Saunas, Korpiklaani, Let's Drink, Beer Beer, Wooden Pints, Pellonpekko and HAPPY LITTLE BOOZER. Although the setlist was great, it was too bad they didn't play my favourite song Midsummer Night. Anyway, this was the party of the year! KLAAAANI!

    2. Turisas
These guys looked so cool, just like real warriors! They played a few songs from the new album, To Holmgard and Beyond, Fields of Gold and Miklagard Overture at the end. And of course there was BATTLE METAL, and the drinking song One Moooore. "Deep inside, we all like DISCO!" and then they played some kind of really happy song. Does somebody know the name of that song? =) Well, I have a new favourite band here! Of course I liked them before Graspop, but now even more. ^^

    3. Eluveitie
Folk - folk - folk! I loooove folk. And Eluveitie were great as well! I think they are not very well-known, but there were enough fans. Your Gaulish War, Tegernako, Of Fire, Wind & Wisdom... Even a new song from next December's album. They would play 35 minutes, but I think it was a bit longer, fortunately! Only the instruments weren't loud enough (especially the folky ones), but it didn't annoy me. Go Eluveitie!

    4. Finntroll
And it was time for some trollish music! FINNTROLL! They started with a very beautifull intro, and then I recognised some songs from the new album. Sang, Ormhaxan and of course they played TROLLHAMMAREN, the happiest song of all. ^^ Loved this concert as well!

    5. Iron Maiden
Well, I like Maiden, nothing more. But this concert was truly amazing! Everywhere around me I saw Maiden fans singing along. Fear of the Dark was my favourite! They played a lot of new songs, but also the classics like The Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills, The Evil That Men Do and 2 Minutes to Midnight!

    OTHER CONCERTS I ENJOYED:
Blind Guardian were the best of Friday, I like their epicness.
Amorphis were nice too, I recognised some songs of their latest album.
I saw Moonsorrow for the last ten minutes, and I'm sure I'll download some more stuff of them.
Epica was the first band I saw at Graspop, it sounded good.
HammerFall sounded cool, Let the Hammer Fall!
I enjoyed Pain of Salvation with their song Disco Queen. LET'S DISCO!
I heard some Sirenia when I was sitting outside, they played Sister Nightfall and that was the song I wanted to hear.
Aerosmith were so awesome! Heard some good old hits.
Dimmu Borgir weren't that bad to watch to for 20 minutes.
Within Temptation played a lot of their Dutch hits, and they sounded okay.
I was walking around, and Less Than Jake and Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies sounded very happy. =)
I also heard some Cannibal Corpse while eating.

    OTHER CONCERTS:
Children of Bodom, I used to like that band a lot. They played some songs I enjoyed (Needle 24/7, Mask of Sanity, Hate Me!), but there was one thing I didn't like AT ALL. May that 'thing' be handsome or not, Alexi Laiho was just fucking annoying. No, you're not cool. :/
I don't think I have to say anything about Korn. I was lying on the ground and some fan behind me was singing all the songs along, I feel so sorry for that girl.
I heard Slayer when we went home again, and unfortunately I missed Amon Amarth (because I had two tests the next day :/).

So this was my first time of Graspop! I hope there will be a second time too!

    TIMMEEEEEEH!
