FOR YEARS now I've had the troubling problem of turning up early. For job interviews and lectures this unholy tendancy towards punctuality is a good thing, but I'm sure you are familiar with that sinking feeling when you open the doors to your favourite nightclub and realise that the place is more deserted than the tundra. I've grown accustomed to this sensation over the years; however, when I entered Subway early on Tuesday night, I was immensely relieved to actually find a significant amount of people there. The night in question was Adrenaline, and over the past three years it has shifted through various venues and formats to arrive at what it is today. For those of you who are new to Edinburgh, Adrenaline is run by the university rock society, Edgar. For a student society they have a prolific output running at least five club nights over many, many different genres, so it's more polished and professional than you might expect of a student-run club.
Adrenaline is the // night and, as such, covers an extremely diverse range of musical tastes. In Edinburgh, it's notoriously hard to find a good general night; however, the present Adrenaline organiser seems to have managed it. Subway, being the near-perfect place to hold a rock night (dark, dank and cheap) was always going to help the cause. On the first of several Adrenalines running this year, there were two bands and three resident DJs doing extensive sets.
One good thing about this night is the sheer breadth: no matter what I wanted to hear, at one point or another it was covered. As I entered the club the first DJ was playing and , a good start to build up the energy in the crowd. By the time the first band, Elephantine, came on, the room was beginning to fill and people were readier to hear something a bit heavier. Strongly influenced by Kyuss, they were clearly a shift in tone: not to my taste, but the crowd responded enthusiastically and one or two people were up from the very start. Once they had finished, the next music set went into /, which satisfied another section of the crowd. Soon after, the second band, Krank Solo, came on. An alt rock band with strong vocals and an excellent stage presence, they easily got the crowd going and quickly grabbed the attention of everyone in Subway. They underlined their strengths at the end by doing some very good covers, in particular "Crazy Horses", with the guitarist going all out and playing some immense riffs with his guitar behind his head. The final set turned to to end the night.
Adrenaline clearly benefits from being run by a student society: an incredibly social night with a well balanced music policy so no matter how many times I go I always find something that I enjoy listening to.
Cheap drinks and atmospheric surroundings make this an enjoyable night no matter which genres you're into.
