Sat 15 Sep – Treasure Island Music Festival

My friend and I arrived on Treasure Island at a little before 3, so the first act we were able to see was M. Ward. He played "Chinese Translation" and "Helicopter", which were both highlights. He employed two drummers for the show and each added nice energy to the whole performance.

I had never seen (or even heard a lot from) Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, but I could tell they were just there to rock their little hearts out which made me enjoy them quite a bit. The audience was really receptive, dancing and clapping along the whole time. Lots of fun.

Built To Spill was the band that I was most excited to see and they were all I could have hoped for. They played: Liar, Time Trap, You Were Right, Stab, Strange, a Brian Eno song I don't know the title of, Car, and Conventional Wisdom. "Strange" was a nice treat from "Ancient Melodies Of The Future" and shortly after, Doug Martsch played a lovely solo version of "Car" to the satisfaction of the entire crowd. My only complaint is that their set was WAAAAAY too short, but it's a festival, so what are ya gonna do?

Spoon was fun and danceable as always. I just wish that they would have played more of their older stuff. I am glad that they played "Beast and Dragon, Adored" though.

Modest Mouse took (what seemed like) forever to come out and play, but when they finally did, they fuckin rocked. They played (not in this exact order): Bury Me With It, Paper Thin Walls, Dashboard, Fire It Up, Education, Trailer Trash (!!!!!!!), Float On, Bukowski, We've Got Everything, Satin In A Coffin, Parting Of The Sensory, Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes, and The View. I don't remember the first song they played for the encore, but the last song was "Spitting Venom". I almost peed my pants when they played "Trailer Trash". I honestly didn't expect them to play anything before "The Moon and Antarctica" but I was pleasantly surprised when they did. And of course, Isaac Brock's drunken musings were a delight as always.

Overall, a very fun, but tiring day.

Sat 15 Sep – Treasure Island Music Festival

We left the house around 9 AM on Sunday, drove across the Golden Gate, and pulled up to the AT&T Park parking lot A in order to wait for the shuttle. They were putting up gigantic signs with a laundry list of banned items...the obvious such as alcohol and video cameras. But also, cameras (they meant professional cameras but didn't really clarify, so I walked back and forth a few times returning my camera to the car and then retrieving it), and lawn furniture, and they said, "There is grass to sit on." We were about 5th in line, but decided to go walk to Borders for a bit first, and ended up being probably 200th in line. A bit after 11:30, we boarded a bus to Treasure Island. It was a nice ride across the bay bridge.

We wandered around the booths. Bought some pins, and played eco-conscious carnival games. Griped about alcohol costing 7 to 9 dollars a cup!!!!! Eventually, paid it, since there was no re-entry. Decided that wine would be the most cost effective. Also there was a monopoly in beer. Heineken only. Eh....Not for that price. Food was relatively reasonable. Had some knishes for 4.50 a pop, and later some chicken and fries.

The first act, The Weather Underground, hit the stage. They were excellent.

Weaved back and forth for the different acts between the two stages. Au Revoir Simone...I wasn't quite as impressed, but I did find that I dug "Night Majestic" so that I have quickly added to my mp3 collection.

Two Gallants, Trainwreck Riders, and Devil Makes 3 seemed a bit too country/southern-rock oriented for me to enjoy. I heard Street to Nowhere and M. Ward, but don't remember actually seeing them.

Sea Wolf was fantastic. I hadn't ever heard Sea Wolf, but considering going to see them in October.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, I did not dig live. I very much enjoy "Skin of my Yellow Country Teeth," but live, eh...

I didn't get to see Built to Spill even though I wanted to do so, as by this point, I was tiring of standing for so long and preferred to sit in the very back at the few available park benches. The sea of outhouses had run out of toilet paper, and the sinks had run out of water, so I was on a quest for a decent restroom. Thousands of people sharing maybe 50 some outhouses wasn't a good thing. Anyways, I did enjoy what I heard of Built to Spill, and I will be checking them out further.

I was really looking forward to Film School, and they did not dissapoint! Awesome San Francisco shoegazer. Their new track "Lectric" is especially good. People were filming Film School and I was standing about 2nd row, so I got some great photos....I'll make a photo video later.

Spoon was up next. Through the lens of two glasses of wine, they sounded especially fantastic. A lot of people were hoping they would play "The Way We get By" but they didn't. "I Turn my Camera On" was a treat though, since that is the song that got me into Spoon.

Modest Mouse---the entire reason I attended the festival! Shoved up against a trash can on second row, just what seemed like only a few feet away from Johnny Marr, it was like listening to a playlist of my favorite recent Modest Mouse tracks with thousands of others pounding feet and bopping heads: Education, Bury Me With It, Bukowski.... Of course, Float On, was the last I heard as we headed for the buses to beat the crowd....

Entirely worth the aching in my feet that continues to linger, the highly expensive drinks, and the lack of seating....yes.

Oh, if you use these photos anywhere, credit me.. yeh? k. Good.

    First Post

Of the acts that performed, I truly enjoyed The Weather Underground, Sea Wolf, Film School, and of course, Spoon and Modest Mouse.
I'll be looking into Built to Spill, but I wasn't near the stage, because I wanted to be close up for Film School.

Unfortunately, despite the anticipation Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, M. Ward and Au Revoir Simone did not impress me as much in a live setting, but I still plan to check out their albums.

I'll rewrite this as a better review later when I have more time.

As a festival, it needed some work, but there were some class acts playing. :c)

Sat 16 Sep – Treasure Island Music Festival

while day one was mostly devoted to electronica (more or less) day two was mostly indie. the boys really REALLY like their indie, so we got a head start on things. we pulled into the parking lot by 1p this time and were on the island by 130p.

we showed up in between sets for stages and did some pokeing around before we bothered to so wade into the crowd for the nights fun. the first group we saw was M.Ward, they were passable, nothing special though.

we went back out and got food, hanging out listening to Sea Wolf from the concorse and then chilled in front of the ferris wheel-

for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. we went back up to the main stage for Built to Spill and had a ball watching them. even modest mouse came out to watch them from the side.

sadly, Spoon seemed a bit off, still a good set, but not as good as one would expect. some beats were off, some chords were off, but the energy was good, so hey. then came Modest Mouse and it was obvious that everyone was exceited about seeing them. Issac even said during the set that 5 of them had the flu, but they were out there in the SF Bay wind anyway, giving it their all. was pretty awesome to watch them in a good setting since the last time i saw them had a horrible sound guy, so nothing was heard.

we cut out at 940p, set was due to be over at 950p and thankfully the line for the shuttle was no where as long. 20min we were on the shuttle as the sea of people were swarming the line. we were glad to see that they got wise and put up barracades in the lot to funnel the crowd unlike the night before, and this time got smart about having all the shuttles there and ready to go with 4 standing lines instead of the one. we were home by 11p, w00t!! awesome birthday if i don't say so myself.

Sat 15 Sep – Treasure Island Music Festival

i was happy to see that the website had a schedule posted ahead of time and they were able to keep it rather well, even with alternating stages. we headed off across the bay around 2p or so, made it to the parking lot at AT&T before 3 and we were able to get a bit of partying in at the parking lot. we made our way to the shuttel and hopped right on, wisked away to treasure island to play for the day.

we arrived in the middle of DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist, they were putting on an awesome set. we stayed in the think of it for Gotan Project and was pleasently surprised. i've heard of this group a few times, but never sat down to listen and i was blown away. the visuals on the screen were awesome to watch too. very moving, i don't think a single person was standing still during their set.

last on the main stage was Thievery Corperation. another awesome set with fun stuff to watch behind them. they had a belly dancer as well (as you can see in some of my footage) but sadly she didn't (and neither did any other band members) make it on the big screen. very up beat, very engageing and warm, they kept bringing it back to the audiance.

by the time they wrapped it up, which was about 10, the sea of people went for the shuttles and wow, they were not prepared for that kind of volume all at once. it was about 2hrs of wait to get on the shuttle, and another 10min wait once on the shuttle to actually leave. we didn't get back home until 1a or so, but damn worth it.
