• The blatant hypocrisy of The Roots

Fri 25 May – Friday Cheers / Fridays at Sunset

Let me preface this review by saying that The Roots put on one of the best performances that I have seen. This is my second time seeing them live in Richmond and each time they did not disappoint.

That being said, I am going to comment on ?Love's diatribe about "slavery and genocide" that occurred at Jamestown. I'm not taking the naive look and saying that these things did not occur at Jamestown. What I am saying is that he went about bringing it up the wrong way.

I was away from the stage up on the hill and as I looked around me I saw many different races and ethnicities all enjoying the music together. This would have been a more positive way to bring up the idea that "Yeah, these things did happen, but look at us now. 400 years later we are all rocking out together."

Rather, The Roots will gladly accept their fee for showing up and playing at a venue that they so willfully bashed.

Hypocrites or sellouts? Again, their performance was amazing, it just could have done without the hypocrisy.
  • Tell the truth about Jamestown

I was happy that ?uestlove of The Roots pointed out how ironic it was that they were there helping celebrate the founding of Jamestown. I thought that the whole time, too.

I think it's very shameful that America is the product of European invasion. It's definitely a bittersweet celebration at best. I think it is more shameful than honorable. It almost makes me wonder if the money for celebrating would be better spent making up for the destruction that Americans propogate all around the world.
  • The Roots are off the hook!

My wife and I went to the concert in Richmond, last night. The Roots were off the hook, man. They were better live than I ever imagined. And Kirk Douglas performed a song by Bob Dylan. That guy is an awesome guitarist.

The tuba player was great too. I never saw a tuba in use by a hip-hop band before, but it added real natural bass to their sound. I wish there were more real hip-hop bands like The Roots.

If I ever have the chance to go see them perform again, I'll gladly attend!

The only problem I had with this concert was the fact that people crowded the stage once The Roots started performing. My wife and I got really close up 2 hours before the concert, yet people felt the need to push to the front and stand in front of us. I guess that's what you get at free concerts. We eventually stood and started enjoying the concert after getting over the initial anger over our space being invaded.

There were a number of people with cameras taking pics and comcorders/video phones capturing video. I did a couple of searches this morning, but still haven't found any postings. That's very disappointing since I specifically didn't take my camera after my wife stating that the website said no cameras allowed. So I'm totally dependent on others' postings to grab any images/videos to commemorate the event.
