• Obligatory ACL Post

    Set 29 2008, 14h39 por sunburntkamel

I say obligatory, because I've been re-reading my old festival review posts (Intonation ('05), Lollapalooza ('05), Pitchfork ('07)) to figure out if it's always been this much work to get our "money's worth" out of a festival. My conclusion is that ACL was, in fact, a mistake. Next year we'll be doing afterparties only.

    Friday
Mates of State where dependably enjoyable. It's funny to see a band like them on a festival stage. They fit better in bowling alleys and tiny pubs. On a big stage, they look lonely, too far apart from each other. It's also odd to see them with other people (strings section) on stage.

We left after about 2/3 of the set, to go see Jenny Lewis at the WaMu JP Morgan/Chase stage. Unfortunately, the stage had an awkward roof and bleachers, so that if you weren't queued up early, you couldn't see or hear her. That was a lot of my issue with the fest, that for every set you had to try to beat the crowd there, or risk completely missing out (unlike Lolla, where you could at least hear/see monitors from a great distance).

    Saturday
I got there early for Fleet Foxes, since they sold out last time they were in town. It was a great set for early in the morning (okay, noon-ish), very chilled and comfortable (albeit hot). By the end of the set, though, they had to compete with the leaking sound from other stages. My other main gripe with ACL is that there's much poorer coordination between the stages, so if you're not really close to the stage you want to be hearing, you're going to get a mash of sound.

cupcakepants and hhuynh512 didn't get there early enough to catch the show, so it wasn't quite as much fun by myself. Attempting to meet up with people for The Fratellis was also fail, so I gave up for the evening, since I was going to see Conor Oberst at the afterparty on sunday. After a long walk home, I was sunburnt (hah) and exhausted.

    Sunday

Stars were our first set, although not as relaxing as fleet foxes. They're more of a CD band than I live band, I guess. Rather than trying to deal with fighting through the crowds to see anyone else, we stayed in place for Okkervil River (meh) and Tegan and Sara. Sara actually apologized for passing out during the Lollapalooza we saw them at, which was hilarious. Darkness had fallen before they came on, so there were no such difficulties this time.

In the end, even with only getting up for beer/food/bathroom, we were still to tired to make it to Conor's afterparty.

    Fri 1 Aug – Lollapalooza 2008

Friday August 1 - Day 1 at Lollapalooza

    Black Lips:
These guys were my first band of the festival and they started it off well. I did not know too much as I had only gotten to listen to them once before seeing them. I thought these guys put on a good show. The band was very energetic and were moving around the stage a lot. The music sounded good too. I left these guys early but one of my friends informed me that the band kissed each other on stage. From what I saw this was a good show probably would have been better at night.

    Manchester Orchestra:
I was excited for this band after receiving this album from a friend awhile back. They did not do much on stage but the music was right on cue and the lead singer was great. There was a little more screaming during the show then on the cd, I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child, but it was put to good use. Overall this was a good show with high hopes for the future.

    The Enemy:
I received this band's album from my friend from England. I am a sucker for British rock so this band was one of my most looked forward to concert since these bands do not come to the United States too often. I was able to get second row and was informed by another enemy fan about their shows which only heightened my excitement. The Enemy came out and started pretty much right away. They were very excited to be in the USA for the first time and had a lot of energy. They did not move a whole lot around but the music was almost cd quality. They interacted with the crowd multiple times but I am not sure how many people could understand their accents. Anyhow the crowd could understand enough and they successfully got the crowd more involved. Overall another good concert. I highly recommend their album, We'll Live and Die in These Towns.

    Louis XIV:
I was able to see this band back in 2005 at Lollapalooza and was very excited to finally see them again. They came out on stage and started with TocarPledge of Allegiance which is one of my favorite songs by them. They were sleazy like usual on stage but in the best way possible. They use their egos and sleaziness to their advantage to put on a great show. They had a lot of energy and interacted with the crowd well. I had a great time at the show and was able to get a set list which made it even better.

    The Black Keys:
I was not too close for this show but they sounded great again. I saw them last year at Lollapalooza and I enjoyed them much more this time. Their newest album Attack & Release is probably my favorite album by them and with them playing more of these songs plus the hits from the previous albums, I found myself greatly enjoying myself. From where I was they were putting on their typical show with very little movement or crowd interaction but they had tremendous energy on stage which made for a good show.

    The Raconteurs:
I staked out my spot for these guys right after the Black Keys and was able to get close. These guys are one of my favorite bands and I was extremely excited to see them again after seeing them two years ago at Lollapalooza. The roadies were very classy with suits and top hats and the back drop was awesome. When they finally came on stage the crowd went crazy. Jack White was incredible like usual and was rocking out the entire show. He messed around with some peddles and sang into an old fashion mic which were some of the cool things he did. He also had some good solos. Brendan Benson was good too but not as good as Jack White. The other two members were great too. They put on a great show and played their best songs. They interacted with the crowd well and everyone was having a great time. The encore was amazing and left me feeling amazing.

    Radiohead:
Since I stayed the entire time at The Raconteurs I did not have the best spot for Radiohead but since I pretty much sprinted to the show, I was able to push my way up pretty close. Also extremely excited to finally see Radiohead, I could barely wait even though I only had to wait for about 5 mins. When Radiohead came out on stage the crowd was overjoyed and ready to listen and take in every possible experience. They started off with Tocar15 Step which is one of my favorite songs off their newest album, In Rainbows. As the night came along the lights on stage were spectacular and some of the most impressive I have seen. From what I saw they did not move around all that much but definitely brought a ton of energy. They did not interact with the crowd much but this was not needed as their music is more than enough to blow your mind. There was not a single time during this show that I was not excited beyond belief. As they pumped through the set list, I grew more and more in tune with the show and the vibe given off. The feeling I got from the concert was one best feeling I have ever felt during a concert that I can not really explain it. Overall an incredible concert an I am so happy that I finally got to see them.

    Day 1 Overview:
This was probably my favorite day overall with the most bands that I wanted to see. Here is the order of my favorite bands for the day:
    1. The Raconteurs
    2. Radiohead
    3. Louis XIV
    4. The Enemy
    5. The Black Keys
    6. Manchester Orchestra
    7. Black Lips
