Wed 2 Mar – Queens of the Stone Age, Calling All Cars
Its a brave band that will say fuck you we won't play any of our hits - or just arrogant and self indulgent.

Last night we went to the Enmore to see Queen's of the Stone Age's side show. What I didn't know is they've recently remastered and re-released their debut album, so they decided to give us a "treat" by playing the album in its entirety and not much else. Enmore forgot to mention that on their website too...

So what we got was a short 80min set, with shitty mix and few of the better known songs. Fans of the first album would have been in their element - but the other 90% around us didn't look too impressed. One encore then its see you later. Even when the house lights came on people didn't leave but chanted for more. Here's a hint - it wasn't because they enjoyed the show, they felt ripped off.

General vibe outside was the same - most people looked and sounded disappointed by the experience, I know I was.

Did you hear the news? Josh Homme and the gang from Queens are re-releasing, re-mastering, and re-mindraping their original self titled release, on Homme's own Rekord's Records imprint. In support of this, they're playing a few shows around the world with the original album played in its entirety. On the 3/3/2011, the first of those gigs commenced at the Enmore Theatre.

It was a highly sold out show, with tickets selling out within less than an hour (in fact, a person I spoke to who even lined up for tickets at the Enmore, and who was second in line, could only get seated tickets - they went that quick). Everyone in Newtown was keen from some sexed-up hard desert rock. The opening act was Victoria's "Calling All Cars", a suprisingly energetic group. They played a short, half hour set, and their fast paced, heavy sound was a great warm up for the crowd. Apart from their music being just a little same-y, my only complaint was their mix - the drums were far too loud…
