Come on! You did not sit through 1.25 hours of HoLm the album isn't nearly that long. If you DID sit through that much of it, then they must have modified it in some way, thus invalidating your basic argument. Besides, it was (as I said somewhere else) well publicized that on this particular tour they would be playing HoL. Colin thinks of it as a rock opera, so playing it straight makes sense. One doesn't go see Jesus Christ Superstar expecting the cast to jam out on "What's the Buzz".

They were not just going to smoke or to their cars to get high. We actually ran into people who were leaving just as disappointed as we were. And yes, I do expect some modification when you are playing a live show, because otherwise why come to the concert? Have you ever been to another concert? I mean come on! Artists are always creating something different for their concerts and they do sound different than on their album, otherwise why record a live album and resell it? I'm sorry that I left before the part that actually would have been interesting to me, but this concert was a disappointment from the beginning and wading through 1.25 hours of HoL to hear some of their older stuff - which we weren't even sure if they would play - was not worth it on a Tuesday night. Honestly disappointed. And, I'm sorry to bmcirillo for offending about the Becky Stark comment, but honestly it was distracting and I felt it was unnecessary and I also kind of felt she was not needed on stage.

hrm...I really hope that "droves" of people leaving early and disappointed is a gross exaggeration because this was definitely one of the most astounding & awe-inspiring concerts I have ever seen...and I hope that most of you who went will agree! I think it was incredibly well-publicized that this wasn't going to be one of their regular shows and would play HoL in its entirety uninterrupted, so for not expecting that would be your own fault. I also happened to go with someone who has had very limited exposure of The Decemberists and he was also completely blown away by their performance. This show was definitely worth the long wait of seeing them live. ALSO, I really have to take offense to your reference to Becky Stark as a "hippie sage-moonbeam chick that seemed like she was high on LSD" because she was in character as Margaret, which combined with Shara Worden's performance as the Forest Queen I thought really stole the entire show, and I was so happy to see them there!

I am shocked at how ignorant it is to complain about the fact that they played HoL in its entirety (a fact that was well publicized), but then LEAVE before the band plays the very set that you would have preferred to have seen. Personally, I thought it was the best show I have ever seen them play.

kind of an uninformed critique of a spectacular show...since you left early and missed literally half of the show. They played for over two hours. Also..who goes to shows to be acknowledged by the musicians? Personally I would always prefer less talk and more tunes.

And my boyfriend and I weren't the only ones on the streets of Royal Oak last night who left early feeling disappointed and ripped off.

Yes, I did leave before the second set, because it was so disappointing to listen to the album live. It sounded EXACTLY like it does on the CD. I could have saved the $58 and listened to the CD at home. Would have been the same. Great that he "acknowledged the bejesus out of the crowd" in the second set. It would have been nice to get that at the beginning so you didn't have DROVES of people leaving disappointed with the waste of time and money.
