When Placebo formed in 1994 they probably never expected to be the chart bothering heroes of Brit-rock they are now. The London-based band are a perennial favourite in festival line-ups, and have stretched way beyond their initial black-clad, eyeliner-smeared alternative fanbase. They've touched Last.fm listeners with their blend of Nirvana's lyricism and Depeche Mode's dark synth sound, and are part of a wave of bands that includes Muse and Incubus. Placebo's latest effort Battle for the Sun had a pop-appeal that resulted a number one album throughout Europe and an MTV award.
Battle For The Sun didn't spawn the hit single they previously achieved with 'Every You Every Me' and 'The Bitter End', but it did result in a few listener favourites. The title track has all the erratic stomp and thrust of a live belter, while 'For What It's Worth' sported a surprise chant-along chorus that resounded through the festival circuit. They 130 of them this year alone, reaching just shy of 50,000 of you in total.
As you've guessed, Placebo are a ridiculously hard-working live act. 2010 will see them on the road until at least March, and it's a fair bet that they'll make a few more appearances with the return of the sun.
